Administrative Law Judges for the State of Indiana

 

Indiana's Department of Workforce Development (DWD) is seeking licensed attorneys for full time ​and part time contractor employment to conduct unemployment insurance appeal hearings.

Responsibilities
  • Preps for multiple cases each day
  • Rules upon any pre-hearing motions, when necessary
  • Holds multiple administrative hearings pursuant to the Indiana Code, Indiana Administrative Code and the USDOL Criteria Handbook. These could be single party claimant hearings or contested employer/claimant hearings. Each hearing on average lasts 30 minutes, thus multiple hearings are held each day
  • Issues decisions consistent with state and federal law, in accordance with guidelines provided by DWD
  • Reviews and certifies hearing transcripts, when necessary
  • Maintains knowledge of current, applicable law
Qualifications
  • Effectively, efficiently, and concisely communicates; both orally and in writing
  • Ability to analyze evidence presented and promptly issue decisions based upon the evidence
  • Ability to maintain a high-volume workload
  • Strong organization skills
  • Ability to learn and utilize technology to conduct hearings and write decisions
  • Ability to effectively conduct hearings, particularly where the parties are not represented by an attorney
  • Strong customer services skills
  • Experience with or ability to learn the Rules of Evidence and Civil Procedure, the USDOL Criteria Handbook, and the DWD hearing procedures
